The Pros and Cons of Marble Countertops

Are you considering using marble in your next home renovation or upgrade? There are different schools of thought on the use of marble in different areas of the home. So, we’re taking the time to provide the most valuable information to you to assist in your decision-making process. Let’s look at the pros and cons of marble countertops in the home.

The Pros of Marble Countertops

  1. Marble countertops offer a touch of elegance. Many of today’s homeowners swoon over the beauty and richness of marble countertops. Colors can vary from solid white and solid black to a range of colors in shades of gray, white, black, rose, yellow, and green. Each slab is unique, so you can count on different veining patterns from one slab to the next.
  2. Marble countertops are heat resistant (but not heat proof), and can withstand heat from a fireplace, kitchen pots and pans, and hair styling devices. Marble will not yellow, stain or discolor from direct heat, unless a hot object is left in direct contact with the countertop for extended periods.

The Cons of Marble Countertops

  1. Marble is porous, so it easily absorbs liquids that are left to sit on the surface. Liquids can penetrate quicker deep into the marble if left to sit for extended periods. Colored juices and wines will discolor marble if not wiped up immediately. These stains can be difficult to impossible to remove. It is for this reason that most suppliers and manufacturers will not warranty marble that is installed in a kitchen. In a bathroom setting, nail polish, and other liquid makeup can also absorb into the marble surface if not cleaned up right away. Remember that it is important to seal your marble tops prior to use, in order to prevent the aforementioned types of staining. At Marble Granite World, we seal each of our marble products before they leave our shop so they are ready for you to use!
  2. Marble is more delicate than other natural stone surfaces. Let’s face it… the kitchen sees a lot of action. Marble can be scratched easily with a knife or other sharp object.
  3. Marble requires some maintenance. Just like granite, marble countertops will need to be sealed at least yearly or every other year. Resealing the surface of your marble countertops will renew the shine and smooth finish as well as provide an initial stain protection as long as a spill is wiped up immediately.

Best Uses of Marble Countertops

If you are struck by the elegance and beauty of marble, there’s no reason you can’t use it in your home. However, you may want to stay away from using it in the kitchen. (There are other, more sturdy options for kitchen countertops that can give you the same marble look that you want.)

Consider using marble in the following applications:

  • Bathroom countertops
  • Backsplash
  • Wall tiles
  • Floor tiles
  • Tub surrounds
  • Fireplace surrounds
  • Tabletops
  • End table tops
  • Nightstand tops

If you have any questions about the use of marble or any other natural stone surface in your home, be sure to ask a Marble Granite World representative. We’ll be happy to answer all of your questions.
